Can One Piece be Saved?

Posted by Otaku Dan

The anime One Piece has to be one of the best shonen series in the last 10 years. It was the most selling manga in Japan last year. However, One Piece in the America is the polar opposites. When you say that you like One Piece to other anime fans, they tend to laugh because One Piece is a joke in America. The reason why it is a joke, it is because of the horrible dub done by 4Kids. The voices are nerve shattering, the music is crap, they over edited so many things, and they changed the plot.

Back in April of 2007, the dubbing company FUNimation got the rights of the anime and started redubbing the whole anime from the start and the right way. When the new dubs of One Piece aired, it was like a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, Cartoon Network canceled the anime after seven months being on the air. I was actually sad but a several months later, The DVDs started to come out. I think that FUNimation is the only dubbing company that can save the reputation of One Piece in America. Below I several Videos that show the comparison of the 4Kids dub and the FUNimation dub, all of these videos are done by the Youtube user, Tsukento.

As you can see in those videos, 4kids f*cked up big time and raped such a great anime. So, what do you think of the redubbing of the anime One Piece?

I'm personally planning to buy the FUNimation DVDs but I'm first going to shop around.

I watched the first video and the 4kids version did nothing for me. But I found the funimation dub to be intense and emotionally gripping. Mind you, I know absolutely nothing about One Piece besides reading the first 3 books and bits and pieces from my OP obsessed friends. Just goes to show how much 4kids screwed up with this one.

I really should get into One Piece, but the number of chapters/episodes just seems daunting. @_@

Ah, so lovely to look back at the past when such events took place. Watched the Japanese episodes before I ever saw the 4kids version so I already knew off hand what was wrong. I'm glad Funimation is keeping the series faithful.

Boy, does the 4Kids dub of this suck... The FUNi dub makes me want to watch this, tnhough. I first saw the 4Kids version last year and it really put me off this, but I think now I'll watch it subbed or redubbed. Thanks!

I think it can be saved, but it will take a lot of work and effort. Fortunately loyal anime watchers will understand the problem and in all likelihood give One Piece another chance. However, Funimation needs to let people know they need to give it another chance and in a big way.

Once you get the loyal anime watchers watching then it is not to hard to convince the casual watchers to start. I could see one piece being the next naruto here in america if not more popular, but it will take a huge media blitz on funimations part.

at least that is how i feel.

I dunno I think it can be saved. If Naruto's "Believe It" phrase (or whatever he says in the US) can be forgiven I think this can be forgiven. But then again I'm a One Piece maniac that only listened to the dubs for a minute. Funimation practically admitted that what they did was wrong, and anime fans sit up and take notice when something is re-done to better line up with the original release.

I had seen a few episodes of the 4kids dub on Adult Swim awhiles back. I was surprised I was even able to make it through the opening theme. That rap song was a little much.

But the Funimation version sounds great! I'll have to check it out at some point.

WOW! They F*ck it up real bad. Although I did not watch one piece nor read the manga because it's too damn long of a anime.

Damn the 4kid for making the anime look bad in the U.S.

Actually, the 4kids One Piece is what attracted me to the anime. I was disappointed when it stopped airing, but as I began surfing online, I discovered how much better it is. Overall, the 4kids dubbed isn't that bad, but it could of been better.
