Otaku Dan: The Life of an Anime Fan

Starting today I'm unveiling my new bi-weekly segment, Kicking it Old School. The idea came from seeing new and younger anime fans steering away from older anime and manga classics because they look old. Instead of ranting about new and younger fans only caring about the aesthetic and not the story, I decided to write about great older series that should be given a chance. The first series that I will be covering Kinnikuman.

Created by the manga duo of Yudetamago, Kinnikuman started as a gag manga about a superhero from another planet who fights monsters on Earth but fails to do so because he sucks at it. As the story develops, Kinnikuman decides to enter the 20th Choujin Olympics to prove to the world that he is a capable superhero. The thing is the Choujin Olympics is actually a wrestling tournament involving supermen from around the world.

I will say it that I'm glad that this series evolved into a action wrestling manga because if it continued being only a gag manga with poop and fart jokes, it would get boring fast. As for the wrestling matches, they are pretty extreme and violent. Most of the matches end in knock-Out but some do end in horrible deaths.

It was until 1983, an anime adaption was made. Unlike the manga, the violence is toned down. Below is the first opener of the series.

So, give Kinnikuman a try, even if it's the manga adaption.

Ikki Tousen, the first thing that come to mind is teenage girls with large breasts fighting each other. I decided to kick off my spring anime season with Ikki Tousen: Xtreme Xecutor. I wish I was watching Angel Beats!

The anime starts with a 5 minute recap of the previous 3 seasons. The is nothing wrong with that but there's a lot of continuity error within those 5 minutes. one may argue that I'm nitpicking because 2 other animation studios have worked on the older series, but at least try.

To sum up what happens in this episode, Bachou Mouki goes to Xuchang Academy to fight and kill Sousou Moutoko(the villain from the second season). Just to get revenge for the dead of her older brother. Bachou beats up all of the lackeys but then, Kyocho Chuukou stopped and save Bachou.

I will be upfront, I liked the first 2 season of Ikki Tousen. But season 3 was boring and it seems that season 4 will be the same.

Well, It's that time of the year again that I start preparing for Metrocon. The convention will be from July 23 to the 25 at the Tampa Convention Center. This will be my third Metrocon that I will be attending. For me, Metrocon is my Super Bowl, World Cup, and Wrestlemania combined.

For those who have not been reading my site for a long time, I like to plan 2 months ahead of time. But this time, its different because the money I had saved towards this anime convention was spent on car repairs. I pretty much have to get a second part job(blogging is my other job) to save money for the following things:

Bus Ticket
I'm taking a Greyhound bus because I want my car to last a long time.

Metrocon weekend pass
I need to get that before the convention.

Laptop Backpack
This year, I'm going to bring my laptop with me. The one I currently have is too small and beaten up.

Money for the dealer's room
This is self explanatory.

DSLR Camera
depending on the job I get, I may buy one.

At this year's Metrocon, I'm not going to volunteer like I did last year. My body was destroyed by the end of the convention. There's a possibility I may be part of big panel this year but I'm not 100% sure. Will do an update post on this in a few months.

Originally, I was going have License This post for today. However, Blogger did not save my post and it was deleted. As a filler, I'm posting every since desktop wallpaper that has Miku Hatsune in it that I currently have on my computer. Damn, it seems I'm going to have to rewrite that other post while you enjoy these wallpapers. Have fun.
