First Thoughts: Winter 2011 Anime Season Part 1

Here is the first part of my first thoughts on the winter 2011 anime season. Today, I will cover Rio: Rainbow Gate, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and Yumekui Merry.

Rio: Rainbow Gate is a silly anime. Rio is this casino pit dealer who has this "magical" ability. Her ability is that she is so lucky at gambling, that everyone around her gets lucky at gambling. Due to that, she is extremely popular. The story for the first episode was pretty weak. I can predict that this anime is just going to be about Rio being challenged at casino games. Also, this anime is full of fan service. It varies between pantie shots and Rio wearing sexy outfits. I'm giving it a 2 out of 5.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is the anime that I have been looking forward to this season. This anime is being directed by Shinbo Akiyuki. I'm glad that he's the director because he is no stranger to the magical girl genre, his previous work was Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. I will say this, the visuals of this anime are just beautiful in every way possible. I wonder how amazing it will look when it's released on Blu-Ray. As for the story, it does not have my attention yet. I'm giving it a 3.5 out of 5.
Yumekui Merry is an interesting anime and not in a good way. It seems the main character has this ability to predict people's dreams by reading their auras. It seems like a cool concept, but it doesn't feel that special. Somehow, after touching this girl's hat, he ends up in his recurring nightmare of cats hunting him down. This mysterious girl saves him and they go back the the real world. Again, it seems like a cool concept but it feels like something that I've seen already. I'm giving it a 2 out of 5.
