I usually have a few friends telling me that certain anime's are awesome etc etc. And when i ask for anime for christmas/birthday presents my non-anime watching friends pick really random anime so i start watching that. Apart from that i never really listen to people and just pick randomly at what looks good :)

@Dan-man: It's random for me. Hype might hurt, help, or do nothing at all. Then again, I'm so behind on my "infinite list", that the hype rarely hits me, lol. But in general, I think fans are just too sensitive (mindlessly "for" and hysterically "against") the hype. In general.

Hype is sometimes what leads me to watching series. Without all the hype I'm pretty sure I would have never watched Gurren Lagann. Hype helped me to find my favorite show of all time so maybe it can be a good thing.

I tend to take all the hype with grain of salt. I have read some bad reviews, but ended up liking it anyway. As I am now enjoying the various Japanese anime on my computer (Basquash! ), I can miss all the hype and make my own judgements prior to the releases here.

I watch what I like and skip what I don't < pretty simple idea huh?

If a friend whose opinion I trust recommends a series to me, then I'll expect something, but the community in general? Nah. That happened to me when hearing about Death Note. Luckily, it filled all my expectations, and much more than that. Hype always applies to popular anime, so the lesses known ones are usually the best. At least in my opinion.
