My Current Experience as a Pro Photographer

Well, I have been working for the last few months as a professional photographer. It has been an interesting ride and I want to share some of the trues that people don't know about. Warning: These are my own personal experiences and it might be different for others.

Being a photographer is not for everyone, if you enjoy it as a hobby, that's great. However, if you're thinking about doing it as a profession, ask yourself this question "Do I really have the passion to do this everyday of my life?". From the moment I wake up, to the moment I go to bed, all I think about is photography. I know I sound like a jerk questioning someones passion, but it's the harsh truth.

When being a professional, you have pretty much two options for work; freelancing on your own or work for someone else. If you're going the route of freelancing, it is going to be tough out there competing with people trying to offer the lowest price for a job. Also, establishing a business on your own will be difficult if you have zero financial backing. My advise is to take accounting and business classes. Ejen Chuang, the author of Cosplay in America photography book gave me this advice when I decided to go on this route. I'm glad that I listened to him because photography is not just taking pretty pictures but it is also a business. Hell, I'm going back to college part time to get a degree in accounting and business administration just to have something to fall back on.

Now working for a company is something completely different. It can be good and bad at the same time. The good thing is, you will have a steady paycheck and have the chance to learn from other people. The bad is, any single picture you take during a job, the company will have the copyright, you will be working crazy hours, and you cannot pick your customers. I must have taken over 50,000 pictures at my old job and I do not have ownership of a single one. My work hours were crazy, there were days that I had off and they called me into work. The extra cash was great but working 9 to 15 days in a row and not having any free time was effecting my health. The worst part out of working for someone else is one's job security. As of this post, I'm out of a job because the owner just closed the studio with no warning. It sucks because 15 people including myself woke up to find they lost their job due to an irresponsible douche bag.

For those who are wondering if some of this stuff has turned me away for photography, it hasn't. To be honest, it did the complete opposite and it has fueled my drive to continue it as a career and to achieve my dream to become a photographer for National Geographic. This has been my current experience as a professional photographer, if you have any questions, just ask in a comment below.

My New DSLR Camera

More than a year and half ago, I started saving for a new DSLR camera. It was a long and grueling task that seemed impossible but doing a little saving here and there, I made it. I finally had the money to buy a new Canon T3/1100D, then the holiday season came and it was sold out every where and if they had it in stock, they would raise the price. I waited once more and when the moment seemed right, I order it. Now I have in my hand, the new DSLR camera that I've desired for so long.

Wall-E was pretty impressed by it.

The Canon T3 is a pretty good camera if you're on a budget. The one complaint I have about it feels fragile because of the plastic body. I'm pretty use to using at work a both the Canon 60D and Canon 1Ds-Mark III, but I can say that this Camera is great.

As for the kit lens, it is neither good or bad, just okay at best. I do not like that all plastic and to be honest, I'll never use it again after I build up a decent collection of lenses.

Battery that runs on happiness and unicorn blood.

Tons of useless cables, CDs, and papers that I'll never touch.

Here is a test shot. The detail seen on Wall-E is great.

This is me being pretentious.

500 PX, The Future of Photography

For sometime, I have been looking for website that I could host my online photography portfolio. Most of these sites are pretty expensive with monthly fees that at the time, I couldn't afford to pay. Then one day while browsing PetaPixel, I found an article talking about the growth of 500 PX. This is an amazing website.

When I was checking out 500 PX, I discovered that one can make an online portfolio for free. I was excited because I finally found what I wanted. There are a few limitations to the free account like 20 uploads a week and some portfolio templates are not available.

An interesting thing that I do like about 500PX is that every picture upload will appear publicly. I have seen such beautiful pictures being uploaded that at times, it will make me doubt my own skills yet they inspire me to do better. It is a website that if you are serious about photography, join it.

Here's a link to my portfolio.

Photographing the Evening Sky

For that last month, I have been wanting to photograph the stars. The thing is, it has been raining every single night. While walking my dog, I saw how amazing the evening sky. I ran back home while carrying my little dog, she's old and she cannot run a long distance. I grabbed my camera and started taking pictures of the beautiful evening sky.

This experience teaches me a lesson, carry a camera at all times. One does not know when moments like these will appear, once they are gone, they are gone forever.

Moments like these make me forget my problems and appreciate all the good things in life.

Weekly Picture 34

It's the return of Weekly Picture. Now that I'm on vacation, I have more time to take pictures and focus on my photography. For those who don't know what this is all about, these posts are like a weekly journal for me that I share to my readers. I also share some experimental photography techniques that I'm trying out. by the way, the first picture in this post does not mean anything. It was added to take up some space.

After 2 years, I finally got new glasses. I like these frames because they are more mature looking than the last pair I had.

Do you see this beautiful mouse pad of Kanade from Angel Beats!? Do you want to buy one just like this? Well, don't because it's a piece of sh*t. I recently got this crappy mouse pad expecting it to be awesome. First of all, it does not have a foam or rubber grip, so it ends up slicing around my desk. Second of all, its nothing but a sheet of glossy plastic, so if you have an optical/laser mouse, it wont work. To make it worse, the thing curled up in less than 2 days. If you ever plan to buy a mouse pad from Broccoli Company, stay away from them.

I'm done buying cans of compressed air for dusting. They can ruin electronics such as cameras if the freon comes out, the bittering agent is horrible if it gets on your hands, and you end up wasting a lot of money buying them. So, I ended up getting a Giottos Air blaster. It works amazing and you can get some exercise from it too.

Recently, Gamestop had a "buy two used games, get the third free" sale. I ended up buying New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Pangya gold for the PSP, and WTF: Work Time Fun for the PSP.

While driving back from Gamestop, I got inspired to take some pictures on the side of the road. This photography style is known as lomography.I currently don't own a lomo camera or a camera that has it as a preset, however, I found a Photoshop tutorial for it.

I really like how the second picture came out.

Project New Camera Gear

Recently, I started getting more serious with my photography. I've been working on my portfolio and I noticed that my current camera has reached its limit. It still works but its not good for creating a portfolio. In the next few months, I'm buying brand new gear.

Body:
Canon Rebel XS 18-55IS Kit - $549.99

Lens:
Telephoto Zoom EF 70-200mm f/4L USM - $709.99
Standard & Medium Telephoto EF 50mm f/1.4 USM - $399.99

Flash:
Speedlite 430EX II - $299.99
Speedlite 270EX II - $169.99

Extras:
Tiffen 58mm UV Protection Filter - $12.39
58mm Filter Kit For Canon Rebel XS - $7.55
Carson Stuff-It Microfiber Lens Cloth - $4.41
Transcend 16 GB Class 10 SDHC - $27.20
Giottos Rocket Air Blaster - $10.02
Removable Photo Insert - $22.95
or
Photo/Laptop Daypack - $159.99
Remote Shutter Release - $3.12
Digital Concepts Macro Filter Set - $11.18
Opteka Professional Heavy Duty Photo/Video Monopod - $14.95

Being a photographer is an expensive career choice, but I don't see it like that, I see it as an investment that will pay-off in the future. I'm really close to reaching my goal for the Canon Rebel XS, 16 GB SDHC, and Tiffen UV protector. As for everything else, I get it when I can. If you have a suggestion on what else I should get, tell me in a comment below.

An Egg Taught Me About Lighting in Photography

While browsing Life Hacker, I came across this interesting article on how studying an egg came make a person a better photographer. Before you run off to grab an egg and stare at it for countless hours, this is all about lighting.

You're going to need two things for this, an egg(duh) and a small flashlight. Place the egg on one spot and do not move it. Then take five pictures of the egg with the flashlight pointing at different angles. Also, do this in a dark room with little to no light source. This teaches you how to manipulate light and understanding it. As you can see below, the size on the egg looks different in each picture but it was never moved. If you don't understand this concept, you should trying out yourself for better understanding.

By the way, it's my birthday.

Weekly Picture 33

Hey look, Weekly Pictures is back. The reason why it happened was a combination of two things: being lazy and being really lazy. Yeah, I suck. Now that I have the motivation again, here's the comeback post of Weekly Pictures.

I started watching Brighter that the Dawning Blue thanks to the Spring Cleaning Anime Challenge. I watched the first half of the show so far and I'm enjoying, I will be doing a review of it when I'm done. The next show that I will be watching will be Project A-ko and Project A-ko VS.

I hate dusting my figures. My reason behind it is that it takes me four to five hours just to dust them and they're still filthy. I finally snapped and took all of my figures into the show and washed them. It took me an hour get them clean, 30 minutes of washing and 30 minutes of air drying. This method is so much faster and I'm glad that it works.

I gained four pounds during my vacation, I feel pretty crappy about it. I started working out again by using P90X Cardio DVD. I have been trying to run everyday as well. I'm being very careful not to injure my right knee.

Lately, I've been catching up on video games that I need to beat. Most of the games that I'm currently playing are on the Wii and PSP. The one game that I'm mostly focusing on is No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, it's a fun game but I had a problem with it recently. What happened was that I was about to beat a boss and the game glitched. I haven't played since that happened, I should get the game resurfaced. I'm still playing a ton of Team Fortress 2 and enjoying the replay function.
